Sessa Old Age grant is the financial aid provided by the South African Security Services agency to citizens aged 60 or older.

How much is the SASSA old age grant amount?

If you qualify for the old age grant, you will receive a monthly payment from the date of your application. The old age grant by SASSA is a monthly R2080 maximum. Older adults aged 75 years or older will receive R2100.

What if your application needs to be approved?

If your application is not approved by SASSA, they will provide you with a written notification with a reason. If you think that the decision made by SASSA is not justified, then you have a right to appeal to the Minister of Social Development At the National Department Of Social Development within 90 days of being notified.

Who qualifies for the Sassa old age grant?

  • You will qualify for the sassa old grant if:
  • You are a South African citizen, permanent resident, or a refugee.
  • You should not receive any other social grant.
  • If you are not cared for in a state institution.
  • It would help if you were not a taxpayer.
  • If you are single, you should not earn more than R86280; if married, R172560.

How Will You Be Paid For SASSA Old Age Grant?

If your application has been approved, you will receive payment through the following methods:

  • On a specified date, you can receive payment at a designated pay point.
  • Sassa will deposit an electronic deposit into your bank or postbank account. (service charges may apply).
  • Institutions such as old age houses.

TIP: If you need help to collect your grant, please appoint someone from the SASSA office or an attorney to receive the grant on your behalf.

When may your grant be reviewed?

Your declared income during your application will influence the review as SASSA decides the review on the basis of income.  You will receive a notice three months prior to the review. You must submit your life certification at Sassa offices annually if you receive a grant from a bank.

When Your Grant Suspended?

Your grant can be suspended due to the following reasons:

  • SASSA will only allow your grant if you cooperate during the review process.
  • Fraudulent activity.
  • Your grant may also be suspended due to changes in your circumstances and review outcomes.
  • At the time of approval, there was a mistake.

When will the grant lapse:

The grant will be lapsed under the following circumstances:

  • If you pass away.
  • Suppose you are admitted to a state institution. In case a state contracts for your care, your grant will be reduced by 25% from the actual grant amount. It will begin in the 4th month following your admission and will be reinstated once you are discharged.
  • If you go outside the country.
  • If you do not claim your grant for up to three consecutive months.

After contact, you need to request proof of your Sassa membership.

2. My parents received less money in Feb 2024. Why is that? 

The following reasons play a role in the reduction in grant 

Periodic adjustment, changes in eligibility criteria, banking issues, or policy changes. However, it is recommended that SASSA be contacted directly. 

I am a pensioner and have not received my old-age pension. I usually receive it in a Capitec bank account. Please assist.

If you are a pensioner and do not receive your pension, it is usually collected from Capitec bank account,

Banking issues, administrative delays, changes in information, and system errors. 

To resolve the issue, it is best to contact the Capitec bank account if the issue is not resolved, then with Sassa.
